POLICE SHIELD COOKIES/ Black Icing

Do you remember as a kid eating the bright red flower on a party cake? Do you remember how your lips turned red just like the flower? The same occurs with all intense colors. Black is the most potent and even the small amount of black icing on these Zebra Stripe Cookies can turn lips black. That is the reason I decorate cookies with black icing very rarely and very sparingly. A few years ago, my niece and I made Thin Blue Line Cookies in the accurate colors of blue and black of the thin blue line, the symbol of law enforcement officers. I realized the mistake of going all black with those cookies, when at the first bite my three-year-old grand nephew had black lips, teeth and tongue. To avoid embarrassment at the retirement party for which the cookies were made, we packaged the cookies in favor bags for guests to take-away from the party.

So these Police Shield Cookies for a police theme 5th birthday party for my grand nephew, were decorated in gray with thin black and blue lines to mimic the thin blue line. In keeping with the theme of the day, the yard was decked out with yellow police tape and a mug shot lineup taped to the wall. The kids later toured the local police department where they asked our men/women in blue all kinds of questions. They sang Happy Birthday and enjoyed cupcakes and cookies in the daily briefing room. Who knows, there may be some future recruits in that bunch of kindergarteners.

  1. I did not know this and yet now it makes perfect logic that black could be too intense. These are just darling, what a sweet Aunt you are!
