APPLE CRISP/ Love is All Around

My first memory of Mary Tyler Moore was as a little girl when she played Laura Petrie, the pretty, vivacious wife of Rob Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Then, beginning in 1970 during my high school years, she starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show which lasted seven seasons. Her character, Mary Richards, a single, thirty-something moves to the city to pursue a career as a television producer and assistant to the station manager. In the opening promo of the show accompanied by the show’s famous theme song (Love is All Around), she bounced around the streets of Minneapolis swinging her purse, flipping her beret in the air, and she appeared to have it all … smarts, beauty, career and confidence. Her character was a true role model; an intelligent woman who challenged her boss, stood up for herself, portrayed confidence and demanded respect. I learned a lot from Mary and I wanted to be her … a career girl and to live in her studio apartment in the beautiful Victorian mansion in Minneapolis. Can any of you baby boomers relate?

Mary Tyler Moore went on to more serious acting roles, continued producing television shows at MTM, her production company and became an advocate for diabetes. A female icon of the 60’s, 70’s and 80's, she will be missed but her inspiration will not be forgotten.

By the way, the Victorian Mansion is currently for sale … aw shucks … wrong time zone and not in my budget!

What do you think is the likelihood of having two daughters-in-law with the same name? My guess is fairly unlikely. I have a friend whose two sons both married girls named Heather. It is such a pretty name but who knew it was so popular.

Awhile back I made Owl Cookies for Heather’s baby shower while she was expecting Mason, who now is big brother to Holden and a new sibling arriving soon. Add to the excitement the anticipation of the arrival of their girl cousin due this spring. This baby girl is the first for Heather H. Are you following me?… keeping the Heathers straight? No matter … lots of memories yet to be made with these darling angels.

Heather’s baby shower had a winter theme with snowflake cookie favors in pink and gray to match the nursery colors. My original plan was a cookie with a pink background and gray detail but instead went with varying shades of the same color. To emphasize the winter theme, look closely and you will see stenciled snowflakes.
