NAUTICAL FLAG COOKIES/ Tradition

These cookies were made for the Christening of my grand nephews. Yes, you read correctly, nephews … plural. It was a big day for twin boys wearing matching heirloom christening gowns, lovingly made by their paternal great-grandmother. I remember Mom taking months to painstakingly embroider the detail in the gowns and matching coats and bonnets, before the task of sewing the garments for her grandchildren. The Baptismal gowns have been worn by nearly all of the children born into our family since 1982. Mom embroidered the names and birthdates of each infant in the lining and I have carried on with her tradition, albeit with less expertise. No doubt she would be delighted that her great-grandchildren have worn these beautiful, handmade Christening outfits.

After the twins' welcome into the church, it was time to party! A nautical theme was perfect for a hot, summer day. The party room was adorned with handmade sailboat centerpieces, fishnets, tropical blue punch and oodles of food and libations.

TIE DYE STAR COOKIES/ Goodbye Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a german word which means ‘childrens garden.’ After a year of field trips including a visit to the butterfly garden, hand-made cards, singing songs, holding hands, learning basic word and math skills and social interaction among their peers, it was time to say goodbye to kindergarten. The five and six-year-olds filed in to Pomp & Circumstance wearing their little white graduation gowns and mortarboards with the green tassel. I had to contain myself as the parade of cuteness nearly brought tears to my eyes. The kindergartners recited their prayers, the Pledge of Allegiance and entertained with songs and a slideshow. The audience was advised to ‘get your cameras ready’  in a tune by the rising first graders, as the time for diplomas neared. These little ladies and gentlemen walked up with big smiles to receive their kindergarten diplomas as their families cheered. It was just one milestone of many to come for these proud youngsters, our future leaders, so innocent and full of delight. Their journey is just beginning and there will be other graduations and they may not remember this big day years from now, but the pride and smiles on their parents will never dim.

These cookies were made for my grand niece’s graduation from kindergarten. The splash of bright color swirls signified the fun enjoyed as a kindergartner. Next, first grade!
