SAILBOAT COOKIES/ Sail On!

Pumpkins, goblins, Halloween, colors of orange, yellow and black are associated with this time of year. Have you noticed that pink is also a prevalent color in October, the month designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM)? This annual campaign is to encourage donations and urge women to get mammograms. Pink can be found in ribbons and everything else, even kitchen mixers and football players shoes. A portion of sale proceeds for pink items goes to charity. It sounds like a nice idea except there has been criticism of corporations exploiting the concept for the sake of profit. Of more concern to me is the person who has lost a loved one or the person living with breast cancer. For those currently in treatment or those who have been there, done that and trying to return to normalcy, from their perspective being bombarded with the color pink may serve as a constant reminder of their ordeal. I didn’t give much thought about this viewpoint until my cousin, who was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer last year, mentioned how tired she was of seeing pink everywhere.

This annual campaign is a meaningful concept in its purest form to gain donations for research through organized walks and fundraisers and most importantly, to urge screenings and focus on women’s health. Much of this awareness during the last 30 years has brought millions in donations and we have come a long way in the fight against this disease. Statistics show that a greater percentage of women are surviving and living many years beyond their diagnosis. I encourage you to recognize BCAM in your own personal way and extend a wish for calm waters and soft, gentle breezes.

  1. Love your pink sailboats! Best wishes to your cousin for a full recovery from her breast cancer. My younger sister was declared cancer free this past Spring after being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer five years ago. I wish the same for your cousin.
