It’s that time of year again when teenagers get all decked out for that big night. The gals are hunting for the perfect dress and updo. The boys are being fitted for their tux, renting the limousine, ordering the nosegay and reserving the corner table for a romantic dinner. Nowadays, anyone can enjoy the glamorous night and many attend prom without a date. I like that idea…no anxiety waiting to be asked nor the bitter disappointment when an invite does not come. For the young man too shy to approach a girl or short of funds, he can hang out with his buddies and there are always girls who missed out on an invite. Everyone can now join in on the fun.
A friend of mine whose daughter is a high school senior told me about the new trends. The girls shop early, choose their dress and then post it on their Facebook page. That alerts their friends to choose a different dress if they don’t want to show up to prom in the same outfit. For those young gentlemen who want to ask a date to the prom, it’s much more complicated these days. Aside from working up the nerve to ask out the girl he’s had a crush on all year, the boys are expected to pop the question in a creative manner. It can be as simple as placing a box of chocolates on a girl’s desk, posting a gigantic sign in her front yard, or turning it into a day-long event by leaving notes in each class on a girl’s desk until she reads the one that says: Will you go to prom with me? No stress there!
This young generation is incorporating new traditions into the old. Prom has always been the last big event prior to graduation day and one of the last times spent with high school buddies. To the prom-goers, have fun, be safe, enjoy your friends and cherish the memories.
